Leo Watch: Capote, Politics, Secrets
I had a rather interesting discussion last night over the politics of the Leo Awards. Like the Oscars even these charming local awards seem to be, well, politically challanged. Not that this should come as much of a surprise. Take Capote. While it technically fulfulls the requirements as a movie who's, "directing mind and control of the creative and financial aspects of the Program rest with British Columbia." It is a movie directed by, written by, and starring Americans - which is totally cool. But should it be in the running? Can this movie be nominated for Oscar and then lose the Leo? That would seem silly, but I bet it does. There you go - debate away on this. Go.
Meanwhile another crazy filmmaker I know Brett Harvey is nominated for Best Cinematography in a Documentary Program or Series, for a documentary called, Secrets. While that is cool, it's his next project that will be the real deal. It's called The Union: The Business Behind Getting High and they have been all over North America making this thing since last year. This ain't no Micheal Moore type flick.

I was contacted by the Leo's and ASKED to submit Capote...I hesitated...hadn't Capote been celebrated enough on the world stage? After much pressure and coaxing by the Leos - I relented.
When nominated, I again tried to pull the film from the nominations, with no success.
So- here's the deal. As much as I initially felt that having Capote in the Leos was "overkill", why shouldn't it be there? You smugly say, .."While it technically fufills the requirements...." like this is something to be ashamed of.
It fufills the requirements. End of story.
The Leos celebrate BC Filmmakers and their accomplishments. Bill Vince and Infinity Features (the Producers of Capote- financially and creatively) are BC Filmmakers.
You will notice that the film is not nominated for best director, actor, etc. It is only nominated for those catagories that BC Filmmakers DIRECTLY contributed to. The Best Picture nomination is for the Producer.
For those who dispiute that the BC based Capote Producers should not be celebrated for their accomplishments by the BC Film community, enjoy the sour grapes. And keep illustrating that Canadians are the world leaders at championing failure, mediocrity, and cynicism.
Enjoy.
