Don't Judge the Bears

Stephen Miller, president of the British Columbia Lions Society was clearly affronted by an email to the organization that was somewhat critical of the Spirit Bears in the City fundraising campaign. He was so affronted, in fact, that he responded to the email as follows:

"I would suggest that before you pass judgement that you look at all the Spirit Bears (about 200) around the Province. They will be up on our website by the end of the Month. Some of the artist have applied their artwork to the unique form and have created beautiful paintings.

Perhaps you could send me your comments once seeing all of them. Remember, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Stephen Miller"

Now, I have every intention of visiting the webiste again at the end of the month to see if by some miracle an attractive fibreglass bear has somehow managed to grace our fair city. However, with the exception of a Darth Vader bear on Burrard Street (which is just plain cool although not really classifiable as beautiful), I somehow doubt that any of these oversized figurines are really going to speak to my soul. I'd like to say that I'm not going to pass judgement out of hand, but I can't help myself... The chrome bear I saw this weekend almost blinded me. Someone call PETA because this campaign is cruel to bears and humans alike.

There is a Darth Vader Spirit Bear downtown? That's awesome! So Vancouver!! What we need though, I think, is a spirit bear pushing a shopping cart full of garbage bags and cans.
