Mute the music and enjoy the HD time lapse-y goodness of the city of Vancouver. BC Place still looks like hell, even in time lapse. What an embarrassment for the opening ceremonies.
I remember these as a kid. They are wicked old buildings.
"BC Hydro in Vancouver, Canada, owns a couple of truly spectacular (almost gothic) abandoned hydroelectric power stations, with decorations more befitting a 5-star hotel than an industrial complex. Built in 1903 at a staggering cost of $1,300,000 (quite a lot of money back then) and operated until 1964, they stand guard on the river - still very elegant, with a whiff of haunted electricity inside." This is the Hotel Continental. I loved Saigon, and at the time, this was a pretty amazing place to spend a few days. This hotel had massive rooms with alot of wood furniture, and mine was just above the C in the sign. The funny thing about this photos is that it shows the complete lack of 100's of scooters that normally would be flying by. I would spend a few days in this hotel and city anytime.
In 2006 the Forbidden City was still being fixed up for the 2008 Olympics. That didn't stop it from being packed. To be honest the smog was so bad I was literally having trouble breathing, and I was still choked that the audio tour (something I have never done since) was not still featuring Roger Moore as the guide, which was a total ripoff. And I'll admit it, I did in fact cheapen the whole experience by having a Starbucks. Don't judge me.
I'm guessing that if I posted nothing but photos of Blake Lively and Leighton Meester's new Rolling Stone photo shoot this week, It would lead to more traffic than any crap I could bitch about. I'm actually fine with that. More so even. And the new format of Rolling Stone isn't all bad. It's smaller, but has some decent stuff - I don't really care about 90% of it, but the longer features as getting pretty good. This shot is the best food image on the cover since Jenny McCarthy met a hot dog in 1996.
Sure, there is the Arc de Triomphe. It is quite fantastic and all that. But closer to the Louvre, there is another one, the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel. It's another Napolean victory arch, you know, but smaller. This was taken on our trip in May of 2008.
Cafe De Flore, on a single block on St. Germain joins Les Deux Magots as two classic cafes in Paris. Sure they are probably packed, even with tourists sometimes, and certainly not the cheapest place, but the people watching at both are so good. This photo is from 2006, and also hangs in my bedroom, although this has been faux tiltshifted which actually makes up for my awful photography skills.
Stop the presses. If you wanted a huge marketing campaign right now, hire Mickey Rourke, get him to do your beer commercial, viola. Move product. Repeat. This is a free one Stella, next time you pay. PS: The outfit is AWESOME and who is that in blue?
I've saw enough Flip Flop wearing hippies this weekend to make me long for the rain on Sunday and Today. I heard a few people who have been complaining about Vancouver for 2 months, suggesting that they move back to Toronto, then all of the sudden jump back on the bandwagon the moment the sun comes out. Funny that. I saw a bunch of people on the patio at Glowbal today. Lots of kobe beef meatballs. God those are awesome. Patios in February. Gotta love it. [Photo by: Terry Murphy]
I know it's only Monday, but this photo is what will keep me going until Friday at 5:00pm. Is there anything more awesome than a woman in Paris, smoking, and looking stylish? The answer is no. This us gorgeous. I need an expresso, right now. I could also be interested in looking this Euro by Friday. Stunning. (Via The Satorialist)
Seriously. I could look at this kind of photography for weeks. Tilt Shift. Who knew? It's so much fun. This will be on the agenda for creating some if we make it to Genoa later this spring. Here's a bit with 50 Beautiful Examples of Tilt-Shift Photography. Enjoy.
I'd also like one of these Amy Bennett paintings up in my place very soon. At $24,000 a pop, I clearly have to work much harder. Maybe I'll stick with my tilt shift photography goals.
My Dad, trapped (his words by the way, and by trapped he of course means having smug lunch in Whistler rather than in Vancouver today.) North of the rock slide on the Sea to Sky Highway sent me these cool 'rock paparazzi' images he took. He even had one of his snaps used by News 1130. Looks like it is still going to be some days before the road actually opens again. This would never happen in Beijing. [CBC]
Don't you just get a kick out of how our cops go all Dirty Harry in their ad campaign against carjackers. If only they'd do a little something to scare the crap out of all those punks on Granville who carry around their handguns as if they were pez dispensers.
Vancouver rescinds into the storm clouds as seen from the beach Monday afternoon before the snow and rain descended. If you believe the forecast, we're in for sunshine before the weekend. But take a believe-it-when-you-see-it attitude on that
one.
Exposure Gallery’s latest exhibit “ Vancouver : A Photographic Exploration” will have its opening on Friday the 11th. The gallery is located at 754 East Broadway and the show runs through Sunday, January 27 (hours are Thursday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m.). It features some of our city’s finest photographers in a group show.
These partygoers rung in the new year with a spin in the streets. Good call by the city to block off Granville between Robson and Helmcken for the crowd of revelers.
The best bargain on Boxing Day? The sunset - which gave way to this picturesque view of False Creek from the Cambie Street Bridge. And it was all for free!
These girls enjoyed the sunny weather by mingling with Granville Island's feathered nuisances ... ah ... we mean friends. If you believe the forecast, we're in for more sun this week. Then again, if you trust the weather report it probably means you're new to these parts.
A few inches of the white stuff coated the Vancouver Art Gallery during the weekend snowfall. It's all gone now but it'll be back before Christmas if the weather forecast pans out.
Rain and chill got you down, Vancouver? Don't go popping pills to pick
yourself up. Just a little break in the clouds is all you need to
catch a glimpse of the awesome cityscape surrounding English Bay.
