Vote For Rory Fails to Create All Star

It’s official. Rory Fitzpatrick will not be suiting up for the NHL All Star game. THANK GOD.

Seriously, I’ve just started to recover some Canucks pride. If Fitzpatrick had hit the ice on the 24th, well that really would have just shit all over this miracle on ice last 7 games.

For all you non-hockey fans out there, Rory Fitzpatrick is your basic 2nd rate Canucks defenseman. Great guy by all accounts, but the man has 1 point to his name this season. A total unknown until some Rochester, N.Y. douche bag started a Vote for Rory‚ campaign to send Fitzpatrick to the All Star game (exposing flaws in the new voting system).

This Rochester, um, super douche hit the forums, made t-shirts, posted YouTube videos and a created a vote for Rory website. It was actually kind of funny until the damn thing started working. At one point Fitzpatrick climbed to #2 in conference votes. The NHL debated stepping in while several players and coaches suggested Fitzpatrick remove himself from the running. Fitzpatrick didn’t do it but he and the rest of the Canucks did keep a pretty good sense of humor about the whole thing. Apparently the boys all bought “Vote for Rory” team shirts and wore them to practice.

In the end though, Luongo made it to the All Star roster the old fashioned way while Fitzpatrick fell 23,000 votes short of a starting berth. He did however finish third among conference defensemen, receiving a record tally for write-in candidates. And as a nice little plus, Rochester Super Douche directed some of the VFR campaign profits towards Canucks Place. That was pretty nice. Fine, I guess I'll drop the Super off of his title.
