Lululemon Nudes

Vancouver yoga clothier Lululemon is a hot topic in the city. But imagine if they used this promotion in Vancouver. This was in The Age. "Lululemon is the rag trader giving free outfits to the first 30 customers who come to its Chapel Street store tomorrow morning stark naked."

I'm guessing that this will attract a lot of attention.

Um, they did do it in Vancouver.

People were naked at the store when the launched their Robson St location.

In early November, 2002, CNN Today picked up on a story out of Vancouver, BC about an athletic wear company who used nudity as a publicity generator. The issue raised was whether this kind of stunt has any merit in terms of marketing. They questioned the effect of such stunts and how advertising in general impacts societal change. Yes, that company was lululemon and the publicity stunt was the grand opening of the Robson Street store.

The ad that sparked it all stated that the first thirty people to show up naked at our Grand Opening would receive a free outfit. Several newspaper and magazine articles and live television broadcasts later, lululemon was all over the news and discussed at hair-dressers and locker rooms all across the country. Over 50 people showed up naked that cold October morning. The event was seen as a huge success and lululemon received a surprisingly small amount of negative feedback.
