It's Sunday April the 2 around 9:11AM and
Sunday Styles: Rolling at the Lamplighter
I was expecting to see bottle throwing and then a bar fight at Saturday's rock n' roll show at the Lamplighter (210 Abbott Street, Gastown). Boy was I wrong. They have been serving up drinks at this location since 1899, and its worth a short visit, to at least check out those high baroque looking ceilings. But don't kid yourself, this isn't some trendy Polo shirt wearing space.
The long hairs of Lions in the Street kicked onto stage just after 10:00. After getting over some sound issues the band joked that tonight they were simply 'kittens in the street'. Hilarity and pure rock ensued. They definetly created some buzz with the crowd. I did see a few devils signs. Always a good sign. Wineglow's Dan and I talked to singer/guitarist Chris Kinnon before and after the set. The conversation was mostly about the importance of delicious pork burritos and the disapointment of not finding them more often, than anything else. Which is cool.
We stayed for the crazy Seattle-based Wages of Sin, descibed simply as "Punk rock sea shanties and appalachian death polka." And it sounded just as crazy as that does. But well worth the stay. The crowd was gearing up for the 3rd act Big John Bates and The Voodoo Dollz - but we didn't stay. There was plenty of burlesque-loving rockabilly types, which you just don't see enough of on an everyday basis.
